Beagle Health
Counter
I am not a veterinarian and the following is
what I use to treat my dogs. Use the following
at your on risk. I have been using the
following methods for 15 to 20 years.

Feeding
All of our Beagles, Labs, and Feist receive
SportsMix 24/20. We have found by feeding
SportsMix our Beagles perform better in the
field and there is less poop in the pens.

Heart Worm Prevention
For heart worm prevention we give 1click of
Zimectrin Gold to the beagles and 2 clicks for
the Labs once a month.

Worms
For the removal and control of mature
infections of large strongles, pinworms, large
roundworms, and small strongyles in dogs and
puppies we use Pyrantel Pamoate. We give
1 cc per 10 pounds every 3 months or as needed.
If worms are seen we give the same dosage for
three consecutive days (per Vet). Pyrantel
Pamoate is little more expensive but well
worth it. A quart (or 946 ml) usually cost
between $60 and $85, but a quart will last a
long time.

Coccidia (Coccidiosis)
We have not had problems with Coccidia, but
it is being seen more and more. Coccidia are
small protozoans (one-celled organisms) that
multiply in the intestinal tracts of
dogs. Most commonly in dogs 6 months or
younger due to the immune system not being
fully developed. As a puppy ages, he tends to
develop a natural immunity to the effects of
coccidia. As an adult he may have coccidia in
his intestines and never experience illness.

Feces spread coccidia. Puppy’s can come in
contact with Coccidia from the mother or
from grooming (licking). This is a common
parasite and is not necessarily a sign of poor
care or Kennel. It usually takes 13 days from
the time of exposure to the onset of the illness.
So if you buy a pup and he is diagnosed with
Coccidia with in 13 days of your possession,
he more than likely had Coccidia before you got
him. If it is after 13 days, he probably came
into contact with Coccidia after you got him.

Signs of a dog with Coccidia: Diarrhea (mild or
severe with/without blood and mucous),
vomiting, not eating, dehydrated, weak, and
could die if not treated. Severe cases the dog
will look like a skeleton with fur on him.

Vaccines:
We vaccinated our puppies with 7-way at 6
weeks, 10 weeks, and again at 14 weeks. All
dogs will receive a buster shot once a year. 7-
way protects against Distemper, Adenovirus
Type 2, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus,
and both types of Leptos. There are several
places you can buy them. I usually by them
from http://www.jefferslivestock.com.
